James is going to be an Otter!
James has accepted admission to CSU
Monterey Bay in Seaside, CA!!!
After visiting Whittier, Dominican
and Monterey Bay and carefully considering the financials,
it was decided that CSU Monterey Bay is the most reasonable
choice. James loved Whittier and I loved Dominican - both had
great campuses, great coaches, small class sizes and sound
academic programs. However, both were private liberal arts
colleges and, therefore, cost about four times as much as the
state colleges.
CSU Monterey Bay is a great college with the second smallest
enrollment in the CA state college system and a campus as large
as Golden Gate Park (it is located on the Old Fort Ord Army
Base). It is also one of the newest
colleges in the state system. Some of the perks include: small
class sizes, free laundry, free cable, the campus food service
in the Dining Commons includes organic produce from Earthbound
Farms and they use "bio-plastics" for "to
go" containers utensils made from biodegradable and compostable
materials. It is an "eco friendly" campus. Also, the college
is very community oriented with community service hours required
for graduation.
CSUMB is a liberal arts college. James hasn't decided on a major
yet but, of the majors he is considering, CSUMB offers those
courses of study. Oh, and did I mention the location - Monterey
Bay! Who wouldn't love that! Being in such close proximity to
Monterey and relatively close to home is also a bonus for us!
James will live on campus in student housing and will have
most everything he needs provided - all he will need
are his clothes and his XBox!
We were told the campus provides shuttles for getting around
town so he doesn't even need to take his car. Getting home
for the holidays will be a quick and safe bus/train ride.
James will be heading off to college in late August. Of course,
he needs to graduate high school first. Bella Vista's graduation
ceremony is June 9th. Unfortunately, we only get 8 tickets
but I will have a gathering soon afterwards for friends and
family.
James is accepted to Whittier
College & Dominican U!
Despite getting a very late start, James
has several colleges recruiting him for Cross Country and
has been accepted to Whittier
College in
Whittier, CA and Dominican
University in San Rafael. Whittier is putting together a financial aid package for us which includes an academic sholarship (guaranteed for all 4 years) and may include additional grants or other offers but will also include student/parent loans.
Dominican University
in San Rafeal (a Roman Catholic college) also has academic scholarship
funds available but again, would require some large student/parent loans to bridge the gap. We are waiting to hear from CSU
Monterey Bay and will be visiting all three soon.
James didn't start applying until
February - most colleges have already made offers so it's been
a challenge. The deadline for the CA Universities and State Colleges
has passed but CSU Monterey Bay allowed James to apply in March
- they are that interested in him. Whittier and Dominican are both
liberal arts colleges which would be ideal for James but soooo
expensive. Dominican and CSU Monterey Bay are both NCAA Division
II schools so they can offer athletic scholarsips. Whittier, however
is an NCAA Divison III school and, therefore, can't offer athletic
scholarhsips but, because they are a private school they have more
flexibility to offer other types of financial awards. Monterey
Bay seems more affordable at first glance (this year's tuition
was about $5K and room and board at $4K but with the rising costs
of state colleges, budget cuts, class reductions, etc. who knows
how much it could end up costing to get a degree espeically
if it takes more than 4 years to get all the necessary classes.
Attending a local junior
college is obviously an option and a more practical
one financially but James has dreamed of going off to a 4 year
college since he was very young, therefore, we will do everything
we can to help him acheive his dream. Even the junior colleges
aren't a sure thing. It's difficult to get classes and, may, therefore,
be impossible to get enough units to go fulltime which is a requirement
to participate in a team sport. Getting an education is a priority
but James would also like to compete in cross country and track
at the college level.
We filed the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and
applied for Cal Grant.
We were turned down for the Pell Grant and Cal Grant. Our Expected
Financial Contribution (EFC) (result produced by applying for the
FAFSA) was ridiculous!
For anyone with a college bound student, the College
Boards website is very helpful (can register for the SAT's,
have scores sent, etc.). For college bound athletes visit the NCAA
Eligibility Center. You may also want to utilize a recruiting
service such as NCSA.

~ Chloe ~
Little Chloe was just 5 weeks old
when we found her in our good friend's motorhome
on October 12, 2003. James was traveling with the Ruzicka/Smith/Lewis
Family in thier motorhome with their son Robbie to a USATF cross
country meet in Vallejo. The family had driven to Vallejo the day
before the meet so they could sleep in the motorhome at the park
where the races were to be contested so they didn't have to get up
early to make the terk in the morning. They could hear a little kitten
meowing but they couldn't tell where it was coming from. Ten year
old James was so worried about the little kitten in distress that
he woke Mike up at 6:00am and begged him to find her. They looked
and looked and finally found her when Mike crawled underneath
the motorhome - she had some how hitched a ride. Mike rescued her
and they took her to the cross country meet where the kids pampered
her and played with her all day. They all wanted to take her home
but ALL of their parents said no. Rob (Robbie's Dad) offered to take
her but they were all going to spend the day at Marine World so I
took little Chloe home with me. I feel in love with the tiny little
fur ball and wouldn't lelt Rob take her. She was our beloved pet
for 7 1/2 years.
Anchor
Bay is located in the north coast in Mendocino County (just past
Gualala and south of Point Arena). Anchor Bay is a quaint little
campground with a friendly atmosphere. We have camped there with
the Charles family for the past three years. Jim loves the fishing
and James likes hanging out on the beach with Drew and Angie
playing frisbee, badminton, body surfing and kayaking.
There was an unusual
amount of jellyfish this year. They
looked like bright sparkly gems on the beach but you sure don't
want to mess with them.
I fished with
Gary and Jim on Gary's new boat and caught a few fish. I hadn't
been deep sea fishing in years and really enjoyed it. One of the
highlights is getting to eat Charlene's freshly caught and prepared
abalone (Charlene and Drew dove for the abalone). Although Jim
and Gary caught some fish it wasn't quite as successful as previous
years. This year was cold and windy and very damp with drizzle
one morning but it was nice to get away from the Sacramento heat.
I took hundreds of photos as I always do. Some of the pictures
were taken from the boat while fishing. I actually took my big
Canon 50D out on the fishing excursion so I could get some pics
of the coast from out on the water. When I wasn't using the camera
I tucked it down the front of the enormous waders I had to wear
to wade out to the boat. (Watching
me climb up on to the boat in chest deep water was quite amusing
for some and pictures do exist but you won't see them on this web
site!) - Pam
The Bella Vista Broncos Cross Country team got
off to a great start with a team win at the Woodland Foundation Cup
and the Lagoon Valley Classic meets. James won the varsity race in
Woodland and finished 9th at the Lagoon Valley meet setting a PR on
the 3 mile course by 26 seconds!
James earned All League honors at Leauge Finals for the
4th year on a row. James finished in 5th place with a 16:52 on the
challenging Willow Hills cross country course in Folsom, CA.
James and his teammates took 3rd place at
the Sac-Joaquin Cross Country Section Meet earning an entry
in to the CA State Cross Country meet for the first time in Bella
Vista's history. James led his team finishing in 16:27.
James is on 4 All-Times lists for Bella Vista on current cross
country courses with two number one spots.
Track 2010 April 2010
James cracks Bella Vista's All-Time list
in the 3200M with a time of 9:47! James is the 11th fastest
3200M runner in Bella Vista history.
