2005 Track and Road Racing
James Sets PR's!!!
|
How does he do it? Is it talent or
determination or a combination of both? Despite training just 2 or 3 days
a week, James just keeps setting PR after PR this spring. It all started
on a gorgeous spring day in April in Columbia State Park...
The Old Mill Run features a kids mile race, a 2 mile run and a 10K. All
races start and finish on the main street in Columbia which is an Old West
town in Columbia State Park. If you've never been, I recommend it. It's
a great day trip for the family. There is a picnic area, gold panning,
rocks to climb on and play hide-and-go-seek, etc. Anyway, back to the
race, James decided to compete in the 1 mile run because he loves to run
the mile. Despite having a cold and getting car sick on the way there,
James blazed to a 5:28 mile winning the race and setting an age group record
on a course that includes an uphill finish. Not sure what his previous
best at the mile is (around 5:40 I think) but that's definitely a PR and
in a road race no less. To see a web photo album from the event click here: Old

The following Friday night, James participated in the Bella Vista Distance
Carnival in the 1600. James ran in the Middle School Division against 7th and
8th graders MUCH bigger than him. James placed 4th in 5:28 just 8 seconds behind
the winner an 8th grader and a fellow Buffalo Chip. That was James' first and
only 1600 so it's a PR!

The next morning, yes the very next morning, James participated in the Run Against Pain 5K. The day was cool and drizzly - just the way James likes it. James went out fast and kept going coming across the finish line in an incredible 18:45 - a 49 second PR!!! That's 6:02 miles for 3.1 miles! Wow! Who knew he had it in him especially after 2 hard races in the past week.

A couple of weeks later, the family traveled to Pinole Valley High School
in Pinole so James could compete in the Mustangs Sectional Meet on May 7th.
James once again PR'ed this time in the 1500 finishing in 5:02.47 and placing
2nd. James began the race by settling in behind the lead runner and letting
him set the pace for the 1st 2 laps. James took the lead at the beginning
of lap 3 but was, unfortunately, out maneuvered down the back stretch on
the final lap when the same boy passed him and began his final kick. The unexpected
surge took the wind out of James' sail momentarily but he recovered with
about 150M's left and tried to come back on him. James made up some ground
but ran out of track and ended up 2 seconds behind the winner. James wasn't
happy with his time - he's still chasing that elusive sub 5 minute 1500. His
next attempt at the sub 5:00 will be the weekend of June 11/12. James also
raced the 3000 just a couple of hours after the 1500 placing 1st in 11:03.
That's not a PR but a great effort after that blazing 1500.
